The Gerald F. Berlin Creative Writing Award — Award Guidelines

The Gerald F. Berlin Prize is awarded for creative writing, prose or poetry, written by UMass medical students,residents, fellows, graduate students, and nursing students in programs based at UMass Medical School, Berkshire Medical Center, and Worcester Medical Center/St. Vincent’s.

Grand prize is $100, a reading at an Awards Ceremony at the Lamar Soutter Library on April 11, 2012, and publication in both Worcester Medicine and The Berkshire Medical Journal.

Authors will also have the opportunity to read excerpts from their work at that time.

2012 Call for Submissions

Submission Deadline: February 15, 2012

Guidelines for Authors

Prose (short fiction or reflective essays):

  • 12 pt., Double-spaced
  • Not to exceed 2,000 words
  • Number all pages
  • Author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address and title should appear only on a separate cover page

Poetry:

  • Up to 3 poems in any style
  • Not to exceed 6 pages for the entire submission
  • Author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail address and list of poem titles should appear only on a separate cover page.

Be Sure to Disguise Any Patient Details to Protect Confidentiality.
